That’s right, it comes once a year and no one is ever sure when. This year it’s Sunday 27th March 2022.
This Mother’s Day might seem more important than most after the past two years, with women having born so much strain and pressure. If you are looking for things to do in Cambridge for that special mother, then we’re here to offer some tips.
First thing you could do: Punting.
I know it seems a bit obvious considering we’re a punting company, so let’s get the shameless self-promotion out of the way with some of our dignity intact. At Rutherford’s, we have unique offerings that could suit you, and have developed a special tour for an extraordinary Mother’s Day experience.
Other fantastic Cambridge gift experiences include:
Champagne Punt – A private tour for groups up to either 6 or 12 people, including a choice of either Champagne or Saffron Grange sparkling wine with ‘Go vino’ glasses.
Cream Tea Punt – A private tour for either 2, 4, 6, or 8 people, which includes one scone per person with a strawberry jam and cream filling, followed with a hot drink.
Picnic Punt – A private tour for either 2, 4, 6, or 8 people, which includes Sparkling Elderflower Pressé, finger sandwiches, fruit scones with jam and clotted cream, mini bakery cakes, fruit tarts, brownies and macarons.

After you’ve been punting, next stop why not try some local gin?
Last year we started a partnership with Cambridge Distillery and we couldn’t be happier to continue into 2022. Their dedication to creating gins that capture the taste of the English seasons seriously impresses us and is enough to get anyone excited about the possibilities of gin.
They have a fantastic interactive space only a 10-minute walk away from our punting station called The Gin Laboratory on Green Street, where a dedicated team offer classes for sampling their English herbarium selection, mixing cocktails based around their award-winning gins and even creating your very own gin tailored to your mum’s refined taste.
Lastly, for the perfect day you might need something to soak up all that gin? Afternoon tea!
Well, the best place for that would have to be at Parker’s Tavern, located in the gorgeously refurbished University Arms Hotel located off Parker’s Piece.
Served from Thursday to Sunday from 12 to 5 PM (don’t worry, Mother’s Day is on Sunday), they even have a Winnie The Pooh inspired afternoon tea created by celebrity chef Tristan Welch and his wonderful pastry team.
I can’t think of a better way to end a day than having a beautiful selection of sweets & savouries in one of the most elegant restaurants in Cambridge.
So there you have three rather good options for making this Mother’s Day extra special.
If you’ve got stamina and you’re looking for more, there is a plethora of things to do in Cambridge.
You can visit the Fitzwilliam Museum for the new exhibition of the work from the iconic artist David Hockney, or even take a walk through the Cambridge University Botanic Garden just as the flowers bloom for the beginning of Spring with daffodils, bluebells, snowdrops, crocuses and bholuas. Whatever you do, it’ll be sure to make your mother feel extra special.
